AUF-CMAS Diver and Instructor Certification

The AUF is the recognised CMAS (World Underwater Federation) federation in Australia and so is able to issue CMAS diver and instructor certifications.

The AUF issues a duel sided certification card; one side has an AUF certification level with photo ID and the other has the CMAS certification. Together they are termed AUF-CMAS certifications. The AUF currently issues the following certifications:

AUF Certification   CMAS Certification
Open Water Diver1 Star Diver (P1)
Advanced Diver2 Star Diver (P2)
Divemaster 3 Star Diver (P3)
Advanced Divemaster 4 Star Diver (P4)
Rescue Diver Rescue Diver
Nitrox Diver Nitrox Diver
Open Water Instructor1 Star Instructor (M1)
Advanced Instructor2 Star Instructor (M2)
Instructor Trainer 3 Star Instructor (M3)

Other courses will be added as demand increases.

Since September 2019 CMAS Certification has been offered separately to AUF Membership. This change came in as CMAS Diver certifications no longer expire after 5 years. CMAS Instructor level certification still expires after 5 years.  NOTE: AUF insurance cover only is valid with current AUF membership.

All levels of AUF-CMAS certification (except initial CMAS certification for dive students) can be applied for via the AUF membership portal.  You will be required to upload various documents so please read on to identify what is required before you begin.  If you do not have the required documentation you may need to complete another dive course. If you require assistance please contact scuba [at] auf [dot] com [dot] au

New AUF-CMAS divers

Dive students trained by an AUF-CMAS instructor will be issued certification cards via their instructor but will need to join the AUF prior to any in-water training to be covered by the AUF insurance (which also covers the instructor and club). You can join the via the AUF membership portal.  Follow the instructions on the top of the membership page by selecting your dive club by name or SCUBA (your State/Territory) and select AUF Membership only - SCUBA Diver/Instructor/Snorkeller.

Renewals of AUF issued Diver level CMAS Certification

Following the introduction in September 2019 of perpetual CMAS diver certification (P1, 2, 3 & 4) cards (i.e they now do not expire) the AUF no longer issues dual AUF and CMAS cards. If you hold an AUF issued CMAS card with an expiry date you will need to renew it via the membership portal. You will need to upload the following when applying to renew your AUF-CMAS certification:

  • Clear colour passport size photo (will be issued on the card).
  • Copy of an Australian issued driver's licence showing your photo and date of birth (this is required as verification purposes).
  • Copy of your current AUF issued CMAS certification card.
  • Evidence of recent diving activity (personal dive log, assisting an instructor or performing dive leadership activities, being a committee member of a dive club/AUF etc.). This can be in the form a of a signed and witnessed Stat Dec. if other documentation is not available.

You no longer have to provide a current dive medical to renew a CMAS certification however you will be required to obtain one before commencing any additional CMAS diver training (unless you have had one in the previous 12 months). It is up to each individual diver to ensure they are fit to dive on compressed air before each and every dive. The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) recommends that divers should be re-assessed at intervals of no more than 5 years after the age of 45, even in the absence of other health related issues. Medical assessments should be repeated after any significant illness or change of health status. Diver's with chronic medical conditions may require more regular assessments.

Certification cost: $115 includes your double sided card AUF-CMAS Certification Card and 12 months AUF membership. If you wish to, or are required to maintain AUF membership, (i.e. for insurance/club membership requirements) you will be able to renew your AUF membership the following year via the membership portal (just renew as in the AUF Membership only - Scuba Diver/Snorkeller category and you will only need to pay the standard AUF membership fee as set by your club. A portion of your fee is returned to your State SCUBA Commission.

If your AUF issued CMAS certification has expired please contact scuba [at] auf [dot] com [dot] au as additional information/documentation may be required.
